About Phoenix

Phoenix History

Hiram and Samuel Colver settled in Phoenix Oregon in 1850. Samuel Colver laid out the town in 1854, which was originally known as Gasburg. Today, the population has grown to 4,855 people as of July 1, 2009, according to the census. Phoenix is one of the oldest sections of the Rogue River Valley to be inhabited by non-native peoples, which were the Takelma People. It was thought that by the end of 1851, there were twenty six white men living in the Rogue River Valley. It was a short time after the Jacksonville gold fields were discovered, many white settlers arrived in the Rogue Valley and in 1852 Sam Colver built a cabin on his claim.
